Anupama Bhagwat – Podcast
“I imagine myself as a child who is near her mother – they have no fear – and that the Almighty or God or nature, will take care, like a mother.”
– Anupama Bhagwat, on how she maintains hope amidst the pandemic.
An acclaimed Hindustani sitar exponent, Smt. Anupama Bhagwat is a leading disciple of the late Sri. Bimalendu Mukherji, the doyen of the Imdadkhani gharana, formerly known as the Etawah gharana.
She prefaces her talk with a small AlAp in RAg Gorakh KalyAN, a pentatonic scale. She is candid about life in quarantine – about getting her young son to keep himself fruitfully occupied and wrestling mundane housework sans maid, whilst keeping herself challenged musically. At the end of her chat, do NOT miss a never-before-released live concert recording (at Bhilai on January 12, 2020, accompanied by Sri. Kousik Banerjee on tabla) of Smt. Anupama playing RAg Puriya KalyAN.
This podcast is part of the Quarantunes series, featuring Indian Classical Musicians, recorded during the worldwide shutdown resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Released one by one, the full series is at https://lakshmianand.com
