The Akkarai Sisters, Kum. Subhalakshmi and Kum. Sornalatha, perform duets in both vocal and violin, besides individually accompanying many artistes on the violin. While anxious about the present situation, they are utilizing the time for more practice and enjoying simple pleasures that eluded them earlier. They sing a snippet of a song they have just learned and share a detailed violin rendition of the Bhairavi swarajati, KAmAkshi. (Violin rendition recorded by Charsur in December 2019 – they are accompanied by Sri. KU Jayachandra Rao on mridangam and Vazhapally Sri. R Krishnakumar on ghatam.)

This podcast is part of the Quarantunes series, featuring Indian Classical Musicians, recorded during the worldwide shutdown resulting from the Covid 19 pandemic. Released one by one, the full series is at https://lakshmianand.com

Quarantunes Podcast – Akkarai Sisters

The Akkarai sisters spent many of their earlier years in Delhi and due to insufficient live concerts there, their father and Guru, Akkarai Sri. S Swamynathan, suggested they hone their skills by accompanying recordings of the stalwarts. Kum. Subhalakshmi is the youngest ever violinist to receive the A Top Grade from All India Radio.
